I am really grateful for other sites who have helped me understand how to do these things and links to these are below.
First, I have just learnt how to do 2 things with powerpoint that really change the multimedia impact of how I can use it beyond the simple presentation of vocabulary.
1) How to embed other files: video clips with a playbar (forward/back/pause/full screen functions etc.) Excel files. Word documents with a scrolling function. To do this read the 'how to' at these sites: 1 2 These two show you how to add a scrolling toolbar to a word document that you insert. By going to the 'View' menu, 'Toolbars', 'Control Box' you can add a lot of interactive functionality to word/powerpoint/excel files I will try and post a video of how to do this here soon.
2) How to add a 'news flash' style ticker tape headline that scrolls from right to left across the screen. Go here for the full explanation. Again, I will try and load a video to show you soon. In the meantime, that site provides you with an example download of what this looks like. You can also download my example at the bottom of this post.
I created an introductory message to yr 7 and yr8 groups that can be adapted. It includes links to the song "mange du kebab" in a scrolling toolbar ord Box. As the music file plays, I highlighted the first line of the song draging the mouse across it, and then, holding the shift key down, pressed the 'down' arow key to move the text highlight don as the song played. This mimics a Karaoke style highlight. Easier to see working than explain, so I will try and do a video soon.
Let me know of any other applications for language teaching you can think of.
